Gut Heal Tea: A Constipation Sensation

(Pictured: Amber laying out all of the herbs for Gut Heal Tea that she will be mixing into a bowl for later consumption. Herbs include (right to left): St. John's Wort, Plantain, Calendula, Ginger, Peppermint, Chamomile, Fennel, Licorice Root, Meadowsweet, Mugwort)

I have been blessed with not many health concerns in my 29 years of age. I do, however, suffer from constipation on a seemingly regular basis. When my body is performing well I tend to have a right-when-I-wake-up bowel movement after my first glass of water. If I don't have a bowel movement by mid-day then I know somethings off.

Searching for a remedy, I learned about "Gut Heal Tea" through a course I'm enrolled in at CommonWealth Holistic Herbalism school. WOW does it work! My teachers have combined various soothing herbs that help with inflammation, tissue repair and improving digestive function. You can read their more in-depth article here to learn more.

Here is the formula:

Base Formula

Blend all herbs in equal parts except maybe licorice as it has a VERY sweet taste to it.

2 Tbsp per quart. Try and drink 1 quart of Gut Heal Tea daily for best results.

  • Calendula flower (Calendula officinale)

  • Plantain leaf (Plantago major) **No not the fruit! The supposed "weed"**

  • Peppermint leaf (Mentha piperita)

  • Chamomile flower (Matricaria recutita)

  • Ginger rhizome (Zingiber officinale) *Ginger is not a root, it's a rhizome*

  • Fennel seed (Foeniculum vulgare)

  • Licorice root (Glycyrrhiza glabra)

Extra Modifications

  • Personalized customization. This tea formula is fairly neutral, but if you tend to run hot, cold, moist or wet you can manipulate the amounts to cater to your body system. For example, I generally run cold and dry so I like to add more Ginger and fennel seed for heat

  • Substitute marshmallow root (Althaea officinale) instead of licorice root for someone with hypertension (high blood pressure)

  • Add Centaury (Centaurium erythraea), a bitter stomachic

  • Add Catnip (Nepeta cataria), helpful with heartburn which is considered a digestive disorder

  • Add sage (Salvia officinale) for support in digesting fats

  • Add St. John's Wort (Hypericum perforatum) for its beneficial effects on the liver *Please note: Only consider St. John's Wort if you DO NOT take any pharmaceutical medications. It is a potent liver cleanser that efficiently removes all substance in the liver. So, if you happen to be on a slow release medication, St. John's Wort will clear it sooner than necessary

(Pictured: From top left to right St. John's Wort, Plantain, Calendula, Ginger, Peppermint, Chamomile, Fennel, Licorice Root, Meadowsweet, Mugwort. I used the base formula and added St. John's Wort, Meadowsweet and Mugwort. My "parts" was 1/2 a cup but it could be anything you want it to be.)

I highly recommend trying to make your own tea blend to help with any physical conditions you have going on. It is how we have healed ourselves for generations and it remains tried and true. If your town doesn't have a local apothecary to buy loose leaf herbs then checkout Mountain Rose Herbs to find what you need. Mountain Rose Herbs is a reputable dealer of medicinal herbs, culinary herbs, and so much more. Don't forget to either get a tea straw or a tea ball to make the tea. If that's not in the budget right now then try and use a small strainer or cheesecloth or clean, washed bandana.

We're on our way to healing,
